Belfast looks to connect with other European cities
Representatives from Poland and Spain are to arrive in Northern Ireland next week to learn of the innovative ways Belfast is dealing with issues of business development, city planning and tourism.
The visitors, who will include officials from the cities of Rybnik in Poland and Valencia in Spain, are in the province as part of the Connect project – an initiative funded through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland – which is encouraging cities throughout Europe to share their experiences in areas of mutual interest.
Belfast is to play host to more visits over the coming months' as these European cities want to find out how Belfast has regenerated itself over the past ten years.
The first group of visitors will be welcomed by Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee, Councillor Ian Crozier, on Monday.
Councillor Crozier said: “The Connect project is a great opportunity for Belfast to promote itself as an outward and forward looking region. It will also allow us to learn from the experiences of our European neighbours.
"The next few days are the initial steps in what is proving to be an exciting project. They will allow our international partners to explore what the region has to offer, which is fundamental to building solid grounds for the intensive exchanges due to follow over the next two years.”
During their three-day visit, the delegation will tour north and west Belfast, visit the Laganside area and the Council’s successful Gasworks Business Park.
The visit is part of the Connect project, an initiative funded by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM), through the European Union Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland (2000 – 2004).
