Employment figures shows further jobs rise

The number of people in work in the UK is up a quarter of million in the last 12 months, according to official government figures out today.

The figures show that UK unemployment dropped by 9,000 in the three months to April to 1.43 million.

The number of people in work is up a quarter of million in the last 12 months. There are now 28.3 million people in work in the UK.

The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance is 862,000, down 12,000 in May and down 86,500 compared to this time last year. These figures are the lowest since 1975.

Minister of State for Work and Pensions Jane Kennedy said long-term unemployment was "at its lowest for thirty years".

"We are building on the success of New Deal, focusing resources on the hardest to help and using local solutions to deal with local problems," she said.

Report shows over 4 million UK employees work long hours
