Farmers to benefit from new computer software
Computer software designed to help farmers cut pollution and boost profits by managing their fertiliser use was launched today by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Environment Agency.
On show for the first time today at Cereals 2004, the PLANET Nutrient Management system is an electronic guide for farmers to help them get the most out of fertilisers while protecting the environment.
Defra put £500,000 towards the new software which helps farmers plan fertiliser use for individual crops and record what they actually use, reducing the risk of diffuse pollution which is estimated to cause more than £250 million of damage a year.
Agriculture is responsible for more than 40% of phosphates and 70% of nitrates in English rivers and waterways.
Food and Farming Minister Larry Whitty said: "Reducing diffuse pollution is essential for sustainable agriculture.
"This new programme will help farmers manage fertiliser and organic manure nutrients on their land more effectively, which will help to maximise their profits as well as reduce the risk of pollution. PLANET will also help farmers comply with Nitrate Vulnerable Zone rules."

Sinn Féin has called on businesses in Northern Ireland to follow the example set by Nestle and to introduce the living wage for all employees. The party's Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Phil Flanagan welcomed the news that Nestle has become the first employer to introduce the living wage for its workers, and called on all companies to follow suit.

Bid To Boost SMEs As Engineering Lay-Offs Revealed
While some 95 workers are to be made redundant at an engineering firm in Co Antrim, a scheme to help smaller businesses thrive has been revealed. The pay-offs are the latest at FG Wilson and will include three sites - Larne (47), Springvale (31) and Monkstown (17).

Interest rate rise needed say mortgage lenders
The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) have said the continued rises in mortgage lending reinforced their view that a modest rise in interest rates sooner rather than later was desirable to avoid the possibility of sharper increases in the future. It is the first time mortgage lenders have called for a rise in UK interest rates in their history.
