Lyric Theatre Named One Of UK's 'Most Accessible Attractions'
Belfast Lyric Theatre has been named one of the UK's 'Most Accessible Attractions', by intelligent audio solutions specialist, ReSound.
ReSound conducted research into 40 of the most visited attractions in the UK, analysing how many accommodating features were available for the hearing-impaired, as well as TripAdvisor scores, and the number of TripAdvisor reviews that mentioned the word 'deaf', 'hearing impaired' or 'BSL' (British Sign Language). We are delighted to say the Lyric scored within the top 10 venues, ranking 8th.
In the UK, an estimated 11 million people live with varying degrees of hearing loss, making it vitally important that tourist attractions and cultural spots up and down the nation do everything they can to accommodate visitors with a hearing loss. So, which of the UK's most cultural and historic attractions are doing the most to improve the overall experiences of hearing impaired individuals?
Welcoming the recognition, the Lyric said: "At the Lyric we continue to work to make our theatre accessible to all. In addition to Captioned and ISL and BSL signed performances on all Lyric productions, we are seeking to improve the experience of those experiencing hearing loss and how we can welcome them to the theatre. Currently, we have a cohort of staff who are availing of training in BSL delivered by SignSource.
"This training with SignSource not only teaches BSL to our staff but also educates them on Deaf Culture, etiquette and things to consider with Deaf and hearing-impaired patrons, such as taking orders at the bar, making announcements and directing to facilities within the building."

PHA Warns Of Increasing Cases Of Tuberculosis In NI
The Public Health Agency (PHA) has issued a warning over a steady increase in cases of tuberculosis (TB) in Northern Ireland since 2020. There were 77 cases of TB notified to the PHA in 2023, an increase from 68 cases reported in 2022 and 55 cases reported in both 2021 and 2020.

The Minister's for Finance and Health have committed to working together to progress the introduction of baby loss certificates for parents who have lost a baby during pregnancy before 24 weeks. Under current legislation, the death of a baby is only officially recognised if it occurs after the 24th week of pregnancy.
