Men urged to ‘check up’ on Health Day

Around 25 health-related agencies are coming together next month to take part in the first ever ‘Men’s Health Day’.

The need to address serious health issues for men was identified as the result of a unique partnership across West Belfast, involving a wide range of organisations including Whiterock Leisure Centre, the Top of the Rock Healthy Living Centre and Springhill Community House.

One of the driving forces behind the initiative, Mark McCashin, Manager of Whiterock Leisure Centre, pointed out that the Whiterock ward sits third in terms of multiple health deprivation out of 566 Northern Ireland electoral wards.

“In addition, it is well documented that men are the most likely to neglect their health and are reluctant to have check ups,” he said.

“Although this is an extremely serious issue, the day will be a fun event with a range of activities such as spin classes, which involves stationary bicycles with a fitness coach to motivate and lead a class on fitness, sports therapy/massage, aromatherapy and water-based hydro fit classes.

“It is a great opportunity for men to check out their health in a relaxed environment without any embarrassment. We feel there is an urgent need to increase awareness on this issue and for that reason the day is open to anyone across Belfast, not just those who live in the west."

Among those offering advice and support on health issues will be the 25 agencies involved, local doctors, opticians, the Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke Association and the Ulster Cancer Foundation.

Those attending will be able to have what is dubbed as ‘an MOT test’, which will include a range of checks, including cholesterol, body fat and lung capacity.

Jim Morgan, from the Top of the Rock Healthy Living Group, said that the initiative was a great example of how agencies can work in partnership together for the good of the local community on an important issue.

The first Men’s Health Day will take place at Whiterock Leisure Centre on Wednesday August 4, from 10am - 4pm. Further information is available from the Centre, on 028 9023 3239.
