Five arrested as firearm is recovered

Five people have been arrested following a police operation in Co Down on Monday.

They are being questioned after police stopped two cars in Newry and recovered a firearm, which was taken away for forensic tests.

The operation took place close to the city's Catholic cathedral at around 11am.

Elsewhere, police are treating a fire in a Londonderry flat as arson.

The fire, which was spotted at around 2am on Tuesday, is believed to have originated from the living room and bedroom of the Lecky Road flat.

The Fire Brigade said there were signs of forced entry but that the owner of the flat had not been home at the time of the blaze.
