Murphy intervenes in pay dispute

Secretary of State, Paul Murphy, has intervened in the ongoing pay dispute between the government and civil service workers.

Mr Murphy met Nipsa union representatives on Friday to discuss the dispute which has been ongoing since last April, and strike action which began in December.

Nipsa spokesperson, Kieran Bannon, described the meeting as "useful" but said that no other offer had been put on the table.

Nipsa say the ongoing dispute is a result of the government's refusal to give civil service staff any cost of living increases in rates of pay since April last year.

The government has imposed a pay package which will add 3.67% to the wage bill of the Northern Ireland Civil Service.

Finance Minister Ian Pearson said the government wanted to settle the dispute and it would be helpful if the union called off its industrial action, however a settlement could only come about within the government's pay remit.
