Vehicles Seized In L'Derry Road Safety Operation
Derry City and Strabane Neighbourhood Policing Team, in a joint operation with the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA), seized seven vehicles during a recent road safety operation.
Five of the seized vehicles are suspected of operating illegally as taxis. The remaining two were seized for other traffic offences.
Sergeant Stewart from Foyleside and The Moor Neighbourhood Policing Team said that the operation aimed to ensure the safety of people on the roads. He emphasised that they would continue to work with partner agencies to make sure all vehicles are roadworthy and driven by licensed and insured drivers.
"We are committed to keeping our roads safe and that includes ensuring vehicles are roadworthy," Sergeant Stewart said. "We will continue to hold these types of operations to deter traffic offences and make our roads safer." Police Warn Against Dangers of Illegal Taxis
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) warns that using illegal taxis can be risky. In many cases, these taxis are uninsured, and the drivers are not properly vetted.
"Police and partner agencies will take all necessary measures to ensure that every taxi operating on our roads is safe and legal," Sergeant Stewart said. "Taxis should display proper plates and carry the necessary documentation for easy identification by the public."
Tips for Using Taxis Safely
The PSNI advises passengers to use taxis from reputable firms and to ensure that the driver displays a photo ID and that the vehicle has valid taxi licence plates.
If you have any information about illegal taxi operations, you can contact the PSNI on 101. You can also report crime anonymously through the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
