Ministers Tour DfC Projects In Mid and East Antrim

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons and Northern Ireland Office Minister Fleur Anderson have undertaken a joint visit to Mid and East Antrim to showcase the work of the Department for Communities (DfC).

The ministers first visited Mid & East Antrim Affordable Food Club and Raceview Mill, where they met with participants in the JobStart employment programme. This DfC initiative, funded in part by the NIO, supports young people and those aged 50-64 who are at risk of long-term unemployment.

"JobStart is a shining example of the benefits our collaboration with the NI Executive can bring to the people of Northern Ireland," said Minister Anderson. "It will also help address the issue of economic inactivity and support people into good work."

The ministers then visited Gracehill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where DfC has supported the transformation of the Old Post Office into a Community Hub through the Village Catalyst programme.

"The UNESCO recognition of a small village on the world stage is a great endorsement for Northern Ireland, reminding us all that our heritage is well worth preserving and celebrating," said Minister Lyons.

Minister Anderson expressed her admiration for the Gracehill Moravian Church and its global impact. "I was thrilled when the Gracehill Moravian Church achieved UNESCO recognition last July and I had a fantastic experience visiting this cherished landmark and seeing around the village," she said. "I learnt from them about the fascinating history of the church’s past and its current work here and around the world."

The visits highlighted the diverse range of work undertaken by the DfC, from employment support programmes to the preservation of Northern Ireland's rich heritage.
