BCC Reminds Tenants Of HMO Licensing Regulations
Belfast City Council is reminding prospective tenants of the importance of checking if a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) is licensed before signing a tenancy agreement.
An HMO is defined as a property shared by three or more people from more than two separate households, where at least one person pays rent.
"If you're thinking about renting an HMO, make sure it is licensed before you sign a contract," said Alderman Jim Rodgers, Chair of the council's Licensing Committee. "It means the property complies with the legislation and shows that it is safe, good quality and has suitable facilities for the number of people living there." Tenants can check if a property is licensed by visiting belfastcity.gov.uk/checkhmolicence.
The council is also reminding landlords of their responsibilities, including ensuring the property is maintained in a good condition and responding promptly to repair requests.
"Landlords need to be aware of their own responsibilities, including making sure that all reasonable and practical steps are taken to respond to any repair and maintenance issues," said Alderman Rodgers.
Landlords can find further information on HMO regulations and management guidance on the council's website: belfastcity.gov.uk/NIHMO
