SDLP Calls For Every Part Of NI To Benefit From MDTs

Every part of the North should benefit from multidisciplinary care teams (MDTs), SDLP Opposition Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath has said after Finance Minister John O'Dowd announced £61m in funding for MDTs in five new GP Federation areas.

MDTs work in primary care settings with the intention of taking pressure away from GPs and hospitals.

South Down MLA Mr McGrath said: "Having seen first-hand the success of MDTs piloted in Down and Derry the SDLP has repeatedly pressed the Health Minister for a timescale for the full rollout of MDTs across the North. News around funding for a further five areas is welcome, but that still leaves a significant amount of areas without MDTs in place. People in those areas will be rightly asking why they are not getting the same care as everyone else.

"MDTs are a game changer in terms of general practice service provision and help reduce health inequalities. Partial implementation only deepens the gulf of inequality, and I had hoped to hear news that they would be fully funded. Regrettably that was not the case.

"What we heard from the Minister was that the seven areas that have MDTs being rolled out would be completed and the service would be expanded into five other areas. This means that we have five areas left (Mid-Ulster, Lisburn, East Belfast, South Belfast and Antrim Ballymena) in which there remains no access to MDTs.

"The Minister's announcement will come as little comfort to the more than half a million people across these areas who continue to have no access to an MDT, and have been left behind, once again, by this Executive."

Alliance Raise Concerns Over NI's Renewable Energy Figures

The Alliance Party has raised concerns over recent figures from the Department for Economy that show a "shocking decline" in the use of renewable energy in Northern Ireland

Sating it's time we start recognising the benefits of enhancing the use of renewable energy, the party's Economy spokesperson David Honeyford MLA said: "The recent figures published by the Department for Economy today show a shocking decline in the use of renewable energy in Northern Ireland.

"This decline is especially disappointing when we as a society should be investing in our production of renewable energy to meet our net zero targets. As a small island off the Atlantic Ocean, we have all the potential to generate renewable energy and be self sufficient in electricity.

"This transformation towards more greener and cheaper energy is all within our control, and Alliance is calling for the Economy Minister to get on with delivery.

"We are quickly approaching our goal of ensuring that 80 percent of Northern Ireland's electricity comes from renewable sources by 2030. If we are to meet these targets, we need an urgent call to action to start delivering for homeowners and businesses.

"People and businesses are facing financial challenges, making energy security more important than ever. Household energy prices have more than doubled due to rising global fossil fuel import costs.

"We cannot continue to allow individuals and businesses to be exposed to rising energy costs. We must make ambitious decisions to transform our energy market instead of engaging in endless consultations.

"The opportunity for progress is within reach and it's vital that any new incentive schemes from Department for Economy promoting renewables are no less attractive than in the Republic, which is itself already well behind much of Europe.

"I will continue to advocate for greener energy and call for action from the Minister. By enhancing our use of renewable energy, we can create a more sustainable society, reduce energy bills, alleviate fuel poverty, and bring economic benefits to Northern Ireland."
