New Partnership To Uncover Ulster's Influence On American History
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a new partnership with historical institutions in Washington DC to explore and document the significant role people from Ulster played in shaping the history of the United States.
During a visit to the Library of Congress, Minister Lyons detailed the project, which will involve developing a collection of archive documents. This initiative will be supported by an archive research placement from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).
Speaking about the collaboration, Minister Lyons, in his capacity as Keeper of the Records of Northern Ireland, said: "I recognise this fantastic opportunity to have one of our PRONI archivists working in Washington to identify, record and bring together a collection of archive documents that showcase the strong influence that people from Ulster had in shaping America." He also expressed hope that the partnership would lead to the acquisition of original historical documents for loan and public display in Northern Ireland. "I am also keen our shared partnership will provide the opportunity to secure original historical documents for loan and display," he added.
Minister Lyons emphasised the importance of understanding these shared narratives. "Our shared stories are important, and this two-month placement will help illuminate the influence and impact our local ancestors had in shaping the cultural, economic and political landscapes of modern America," he stated.
The PRONI archivist is set to work alongside experts at the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and other relevant institutions in Washington later this year to undertake the research and collation of materials. The project aims to provide a deeper understanding of the historical connections between Ulster and the United States.
