Sinn Féin Calls for Immediate Publication of Irish Language Strategy

Sinn Féin MLA Nicola Brogan has called on Communities Minister Gordon Lyons to publish the long-awaited Irish Language Strategy, highlighting his legal obligation to do so. This call came after her party tabled a motion in the Assembly on Tuesday, demanding the strategy's immediate release.

Ms Brogan, Sinn Féin’s spokesperson for culture, emphasised the growth of the Irish language, stating, "In communities across the island, Gaeilge is thriving, with record numbers of children entering Irish Medium Education, and an energetic, grassroots revival of the language continues."

However, she criticised the Minister for the ongoing delays, saying, "Despite this, the Irish Language Strategy, which Gordon Lyons is legally obliged to bring forward, continues to be delayed by the minister. He also refuses to meet with Conradh na Gaeilge, despite repeated requests by the group for a meeting."

Ms Brogan also stressed the inclusive nature of the language and called for cross-party support. "The Irish language belongs to us all, and is to be championed, celebrated and embraced by people right across the island. It’s time for the Communities Minister to bring forward the Irish Language Strategy without delay, and for all parties to work together to ensure its full implementation."
