PSNI Joins National Crackdown On Fraud
Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's (PSNI) Economic Crime Unit have participated in Operation Henhouse, a UK-wide initiative aimed at tackling fraud.
The two-month campaign, coordinated by the National Economic Crime Centre and City of London Police, saw intensified efforts across the UK throughout January and February.
During this period, the PSNI achieved notable results, including the seizure of £444,728 under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. Officers engaged with 42 victims of fraud, conducted two search warrants (one in London and one in Northern Ireland), and seized documentation and electronic equipment for further analysis.
The PSNI made four arrests, charged two individuals with fraud and money laundering offences, and released two others on bail pending further investigation. Additionally, four files were submitted to the Public Prosecution Service for consideration regarding fraud and money laundering. Detective Chief Inspector Uel Boyd, from the PSNI's Economic Crime Unit, emphasised the ongoing nature of fraud investigations: "Our fraud investigations are ongoing all year long, and our work doesn't end with the culmination of Op Henhouse. Importantly, however, by focusing on an intensified period of activity, this campaign puts the serious issue of fraud firmly in the spotlight. It highlights our concerted efforts to tackle and disrupt the activities of criminals, not just here in Northern Ireland, but throughout the UK."
He highlighted that "Money Laundering, shell company fraud, investment fraud and courier fraud are priorities for our Economic Crime Unit. And, with the collective efforts of a number of Police Service teams and partner agencies, we will continue to work tirelessly to crackdown on fraudulent activities."
Nationally, UK police forces, supported by partner agencies, made 422 arrests and seized £7.5 million in cash and assets. Operation Henhouse, supported by the National Economic Crime Centre and City of London Police, provided funding for additional operational activity.
Detective Chief Inspector Boyd encouraged public participation: "We also rely upon the support of members of the public, and I'm keen to take every opportunity to ask you, if you have any information or concerns, to please speak to us. You can call us on 101 or contact, with total anonymity, the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
