£1.9m Funding Boost For NI Active Travel Projects

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a £1.9 million funding allocation to support seven active travel projects being delivered by councils across Northern Ireland.

The investment aims to create cleaner and greener connections, aligning with the Department for Infrastructure's vision for a better future. Minister Kimmins emphasised the benefits of active travel initiatives: "Active travel initiatives are a tangible way of delivering on that vision, as they are designed to foster a healthier environment and improve community wellbeing by encouraging sustainable modes of transportation such as walking, wheeling, and cycling."

Last year, the Department for Infrastructure invited councils to submit proposals for greenway and active travel projects for capital funding consideration. Following this process, seven projects have been selected to receive funding.

Expressing her delight in allocating the funds, Minister Kimmins said: "Seven projects have now been identified and I am delighted to allocate £1.9m to help those councils deliver on their priorities for active travel. My department is committed to supporting councils to realise their ambitions and will continue to work with them to develop their longer term plans for greenways and other active travel related facilities."

The Minister concluded by highlighting the broader benefits of promoting active travel: "I want to focus on delivering positive change for people, the economy and the environment which will build the foundations for a better future. By working together, we can create cleaner and greener connections that are aligned with regional needs and priorities. Creating places that encourage more people to consider walking, wheeling and cycling as part of their daily routine is not just good for the environment but is also beneficial for our physical and mental wellbeing."

The specific projects receiving funding and their locations have not yet been detailed in the announcement. However, the investment signals a commitment to developing infrastructure that supports sustainable transport options and enhances community well-being across Northern Ireland.
