She paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, stating: "Pope Francis led with humility, grace and decency, qualities that earned him the admiration of people of every faith and none. I hope Pope Leo will continue in that spirit, offering leadership that is compassionate, courageous and grounded in service."

Ms Hanna also highlighted the role she believes the new Pontiff can play on the international stage. "At a time when so many across the world are suffering, I also hope Pope Leo will not shy away from calling out injustice and inhumanity. From Gaza to Ukraine, the Pope has a vital role to play in standing up to tyranny and providing a voice of hope and dignity for those in despair. He must also use his influence for good in his home country."

Concluding her remarks, the SDLP Leader said: "The SDLP has always believed in the power of moral leadership to shape a better world. I wish Pope Leo every success in the challenges ahead and hope he will be a source of inspiration to all those working for peace, justice and compassion."
