Man Extradited From RoI To Face Terrorism Charges

A 58-year-old man has been extradited from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland today, Tuesday 13th May, to face a number of terrorism-related charges.

The man was originally arrested in the Republic of Ireland on 8th December 2021, based on an extradition warrant. His successful return to Northern Ireland today marks the completion of those extradition proceedings.

He is the subject of an investigation by the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Terrorism Investigation Unit (TIU) and is sought to stand trial for offences including belonging to a proscribed organisation, directing terrorism, conspiracy to direct terrorism, and preparation of acts of terrorism.

These charges are part of Operation Arbacia, an ongoing investigation into the activities of the New IRA. The alleged offences occurred in the Omagh area in July 2020.

The man is due to appear before Omagh Magistrates' Court later today.

Sergeant Davey from the PSNI's International Policing Unit commented: "Today's extradition demonstrates our continued and effective working with partners to track down wanted persons and bring offenders to justice. The Police Service of Northern Ireland continues to work closely with authorities in the Republic of Ireland to locate and return those wanted to stand trial in Northern Ireland."

He added: "In this particular case, we worked closely with the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit and An Garda Síochána to locate this man and bring him before the courts. PSNI will relentlessly pursue those sought to stand trial in this jurisdiction."

Man Arrested In L'Derry
A 20-year-old man has been arrested in L'Derry. Officers from the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation unit carried out a search at a property in connection with an ongoing on Wednesday, 04 November. A number of items were seized for further examination. The man was taken to be questioned, however he has now been released.

NI Terrorism Threat Level Raised To 'Severe'
The terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland has been raised by 'Substantial' to 'Severe', which means that M15 believe that the risk of an a terrorist attack has increased from 'likely' to "very likely".
