New Campaign Urges Driver Caution Around Buses To Protect Children

The Department for Infrastructure has launched a new advertising campaign aimed at highlighting the significant dangers children face when getting on and off buses.

The advertisements, which will be prominently displayed on the back of buses and at bus stops, are designed to alert drivers to the need for increased vigilance around these vehicles, where pedestrians, particularly children, may be crossing.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins underscored the importance of the campaign. "This advertising campaign is an important reminder to drivers to take care around buses, which can block a motorist's view," she stated.

Minister Kimmins urged all motorists to be especially careful when buses are engaged in passenger drop-offs or pick-ups. She also highlighted a specific risk in rural areas: "Drivers should also be aware that school buses in rural areas may make several stops and children may need to cross to the opposite side of the road to get home."

Furthermore, the Minister reminded drivers to maintain appropriate speeds in educational zones. "We must also remember to drive slowly around schools where the speed limit is often a maximum of 20mph," she added.

Concluding her remarks, Minister Kimmins emphasised the collective responsibility for road safety. "By respecting everyone's journey, we will help to improve the safety of our roads, particularly for our children."
