MLA Pushes For Removal of 'Eyesore' Wire Mesh On Whiteabbey Coastal Barriers

Alliance East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson has met with the Infrastructure Minister to advocate for the removal of wire mesh from newly installed barriers along the Shore Road in Whiteabbey. Mr Dickson described the barriers as an "eyesore" that obstruct excellent coastal views of Belfast Lough.

"The new barriers installed along the shoreline in Whiteabbey are a complete eyesore, something the Department for Infrastructure should have known before installing them," said Mr Dickson.

He criticised the lack of public consultation prior to their erection, stating: "These barriers were put up without any public consultation and have faced significant opposition from the local community due to their unattractive appearance and obstruction of some of the best views across Belfast Lough."

Racially Motivated Hate Crime Reported In East Belfast

Police in east Belfast are appealing for information after a house in Kincraig Avenue was subjected to criminal damage on Tuesday, 20 May. The incident is being treated by police as a racially motivated hate crime.

Sergeant McAleavy reported that at approximately 11pm on Tuesday night, bricks were thrown through two windows of a house in the area. Three males, described as wearing grey tracksuits, were seen fleeing the scene. Thankfully, there have been no reports of any injuries.

"No one should be victimised or intimidated due to their ethnicity and there are no excuses," said Sergeant McAleavy. "Hate has a far-reaching and damaging impact on the whole community and we are committed to doing everything possible to prevent incidents, support victims and pursue perpetrators."

Police are urging anyone with information, or who may have CCTV, dash-cam, or doorbell footage from the Kincraig Avenue area that could assist the investigation, to come forward. Witnesses are asked to call police at Strandtown on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1846 20/05/25.

Alternatively, a report can be submitted online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org/.
