Police Appeal For Information On 1973 Murder Of Marian Beattie
Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Legacy Investigation Branch are appealing to the public for information regarding the murder of 18-year-old Marian Beattie, whose body was discovered at the bottom of a quarry near Aughnacloy over 50 years ago.
Marian was last seen leaving a charity dance at Hadden's Garage in Aughnacloy with a young man shortly after 1 AM on Saturday, March 31, 1973. She had attended the dance on Friday, March 30, to listen to her brother's band. Her body was found in the nearby quarry, approximately 80-100ft below the car park, just after 6 AM the same morning.
Detective Inspector Thompson, from the Legacy Investigation Branch, stated: "We believe Marian left the dance at Hadden's Garage with a man, walking in the direction of the nearby car park at the top of Hadden's Quarry about 400 yards away from the garage. We do not know what happened next but Marian's body was found at the bottom of the quarry approximately 80-100ft below the car park." Police are urging anyone who was at the dance at Hadden's Garage on the night of Friday, March 30, 1973, to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw who Marian was dancing or speaking with, or if they saw her leave the dance with a man and know his identity. Information about seeing her in the quarry car park at any time after 1:15 AM on Saturday morning is also sought.
Detective Inspector Thompson also asked: "Additionally, do you remember anyone who was at the dance returning home distressed or with dirt on their clothes? Has anyone ever talked about the events of that night?"
Marian's family are seeking answers, and detectives are appealing to anyone who can help progress the investigation and bring closure to the Beattie family to contact the Legacy Investigation Branch. Detectives can be reached by calling 101. Alternatively, a report can be made online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
