Schools Honoured For Exceptional Pastoral Care

Ashfield Boys' High School in Belfast and Donard School in Banbridge have both been recognised for their outstanding pastoral care at an award ceremony hosted by the Department of Education and the Public Health Agency (PHA).

The Derrytrasna Pastoral Care award, established in 2014 by the Department of Education in partnership with the PHA, acknowledges school communities that demonstrate exceptional effort in supporting the pastoral care of pupils and their families.

Education Minister Paul Givan highlighted the crucial role schools play in young people's lives. "Young people today are facing many challenges and that is why the support provided by our schools can prove vital in helping them deal with the difficulties and hardships of life," he said.

Minister Givan further explained that exceptional pastoral care extends beyond routine support. "Excellent pastoral care is not about the everyday support offered by schools. It is about a level of care and help that is provided over and above what is expected, and it is important to acknowledge and celebrate such work."

Dr Joanne McClean, Director of Public Health at the PHA, underscored the impact of quality pastoral care on young people's well-being. "The Public Health Agency is committed to helping support children and young people secure the best start in life. The provision of quality pastoral care has the potential to improve education and health outcomes for our young people and so can play a role in helping to reduce health inequalities. I commend this year's winners for their exceptional commitment to pastoral care."
