Minister Calls For Behavioural Change To Eliminate Road Fatalities

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has highlighted concerning new statistics revealing that 297 people were killed or seriously injured (KSI) in collisions caused by speeding in Northern Ireland between 2019 and 2023.

The Minister emphasised that young people, aged 16 to 24, accounted for a disproportionate 41% of these casualties, while males represented 64% of those killed or seriously injured due to speeding. The figures also show that 70% of KSI speeding collisions occurred on rural roads.

Minister Kimmins expressed profound concern over the impact on communities: "Too many people are affected by serious road traffic collisions in our communities." She specifically noted the disproportionate impact on "young people and males - our children, among them our brothers, fathers and sons."

The Minister underscored that changing road user behaviour is crucial for achieving the long-term goal of eliminating death and serious injury by 2050. She urged all road users to "slow down and take better care on our roads," calling the latest figures "another sad and stark reminder of the importance of reducing our speed... because this will in turn help to reduce the number of families devastated by serious road traffic collisions."
