NI To Mark 250th Anniversary Of US Declaration Of Independence
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has launched the first in a series of events marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The inaugural event, 'Ireland and America: 250th Anniversary Perspectives', organised by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, was fully booked, indicating strong public interest in the 2026 milestone.
Opening the event at PRONI, Minister Lyons underscored the global significance of the anniversary and the considerable role played by people from Ulster in the formation of modern America.
"I am keen to promote the impact Ulster-Scots and Irish American migrants had on the creation and development of the United States of America, influencing government, civic society, business and culture," Minister Lyons stated. "This important milestone offers Northern Ireland an opportunity to build on our shared historical legacy and to celebrate the connections between our ancestors and their role in shaping America after independence."
The Minister added that it was "fitting that the first event in this series takes place at PRONI, home to thousands of rare historical documents that tell the migration stories of those who left Ireland for America, a truly personal record of their experiences in the search of a new life."
Recognising the deep bonds between Northern Ireland and the United States, Minister Lyons acknowledged the widespread local interest in commemorating the anniversary. He recently announced £250,000 in funding for Northern Ireland to celebrate the anniversary, with further details to be unveiled in the coming months.

The Stewartstown Road store, which has undergone a major redevelopment, will reopen on December 5th. The new Carryduff store, Lidl’s 43rd in Northern Ireland, will open on December 12th.
