Downpatrick bus station set for £2m upgrade

Downpatrick Bus Station is to benefit from a £2million upgrade, which will see the existing facility replaced by a fully modern purpose-built centre.

Translink said the redevelopment project reflected its commitment to customers in the area, bringing the service into line with the standards being rolled out across the company's bus and rail network.

Gary Mawhinney, Translink's District Manager for the area, said: "Greater convenience and comfort for customers and staff will be the hallmarks of the new station, enabling us to build on the excellent service levels we currently offer here in Downpatrick.

"Passengers will particularly welcome the new covered departure stands, heated waiting area, electronic screens carrying up-to-the-minute journey information, dedicated parent and baby room, and CCTV to improve their security.

"Full provision will also be made for disabled customers, with the introduction of special features such as low-level ticket desks and an induction loop for the hard of hearing, while custom-built staff facilities, including new shower area, canteen, and recreation room, will enhance working conditions for our workforce."

A temporary bus station has been erected and will operate throughout the construction period - which is due to complete by summer 2005 - to ensure that services are not disrupted.

The project is part funded by the European Union Peace and Reconciliation programme.
