Economy Minister Emphasises Cross-Island Energy Transition
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald today addressed over 300 energy sector leaders in Croke Park, Dublin, as she jointly launched the 'Energy Ireland' conference alongside Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien TD.
The Minister underscored the shared opportunities and challenges inherent in delivering the energy transition across the island of Ireland.
Dr Archibald stated that the establishment of a decarbonised energy system forms the cornerstone of her four economic priorities for Northern Ireland: delivering more good jobs; addressing regional imbalance; increasing productivity; and delivering decarbonisation. Addressing delegates, the Minister said: "Energy decarbonisation presents shared opportunities and challenges. By working together, we can deliver a net-zero future. Bringing people on this journey - changing individual behaviour, how companies operate, and how our economy is structured - is challenging. But there is an opportunity for a fairer and more prosperous economy."
She continued: "Implementation and delivery of our energy transition will be driven by many of those in the room today; as innovators, as investors, and as implementors. It is my job as Economy Minister to make sure you are enabled by government to do this."
The Minister highlighted the Executive's commitment to delivering renewable energy targets, noting that the transition would benefit homes and businesses. "We are committed to delivering at least 80% of our electricity consumption from a diverse mix of renewable sources by 2030, and by moving towards self-sufficiency in affordable, renewable energy this will help us meet these targets, and bring tangible benefits for homes, businesses and our communities."
Dr Archibald provided an update on key actions outlined in this year's Energy Strategy Action Plan, including a Smart Meter Design Plan and a forthcoming renewable electricity support scheme. She also confirmed that a mid-term review of the Energy Strategy is scheduled for publication by the end of 2025.
