Kneecap's Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh Released On Bail
Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, member of Irish language hip hop group Kneecap, has been released on unconditional bail in relation to a terror charge.
The 27 year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London this morning (18 June), accused of supporting Hezbollah by displaying a flag at a gig on 21 November 2024 at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town.
Support of the Lebanese militant group is banned in Britain as a terrorist organisation.
The rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was accompanied to the court by fellow Kneecap members Naoise Ó Cairealláin (Móglaí Bap) and JJ Ó Dochartaigh (DJ Próvaí). Mr Ó hAnnaidh's next court hearing has been set for 20 August. Supporters of Kneecap formed largely outside of the court in protest, displaying Palestinian and Irish flags. Meanwhile, among those present inside of the court were politicians John Finucane and Paul Maskey.
The Sinn Féin MPs addressed the protest outside of the court this morning. Ahead of the demonstration, West Belfast MP Paul Maskey said: "Kneecap's courage in calling out Israel's genocide in Palestine, despite the full weight of the western establishment against them, deserves recognition and support. They are on the right side of history."
Following the proceedings, Kneecap posted on social media: "To all the groups who turned out today fair f****. See yis again August 20th. They're already on the back foot... We will fight. We will win. FREE PALESTINE."
The group have also referred to the case against Mr Óg Ó hAnnaidh as a 'witch-hunt'.
