Man Jailed Over Threatening Communications And Criminal Damage

A 34-year-old Belfast man, Aaron Curragh, was sentenced to 31 months at Belfast Crown Court after pleading guilty to offences including threatening communications and criminal damage.

Curragh will serve half of the sentence in custody and the remaining half on licence.

Commenting on the sentencing, Chief Superintendent Stephen Murray condemned all forms of abuse, harassment, or criminality directed towards elected representatives. He highlighted the particular challenges faced by female elected representatives, who are "too often the subject of vile threats and offensive abuse."

"It is wholly unacceptable that anyone should face abuse or threats simply for carrying out the duties of their office," Chief Superintendent Murray stated. He added that the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) will thoroughly investigate such offences, hoping that this sentencing serves as a clear warning.

Chief Superintendent Murray also commended the "determination and resilience" of the two individuals who pursued the case, ensuring the defendant was held accountable.

The PSNI affirmed its commitment to supporting all politicians, ensuring they can perform their roles free from fear and intimidation. The force regularly engages with elected representatives to provide personal safety information, outline police support, and advise on when to report incidents.
