HMRC Urges Young Jobseekers To Download App For Summer Work
With exams wrapping up and the summer break approaching, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is encouraging young people finishing school, college, or university to download the HMRC app.
The app offers a straightforward way for them to access essential information, making them ready for summer employment and helping them manage their earnings.
The HMRC app provides jobseekers with immediate access to their employment history, which can be crucial for quick job applications. Once they start working, the app ensures they have their tax code and National Insurance (NI) number readily available to give to their employer. This helps guarantee they are paid correctly and pay the right amount of tax, ultimately putting more money into their pockets.
Last year, between May and August, an average of 40,000 more young people were employed each month compared to the September to December period. Whether seeking roles in hospitality, leisure, retail, or even fruit picking, the HMRC app simplifies the process by providing instant access to necessary tax and salary details with minimal fuss.
Young people are already significant users of the app, accounting for a fifth of all users. By April 2025, over 1.2 million people aged 25 and under had downloaded it. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, commented: "Earning extra cash is important when young people have down time from studying. Downloading the HMRC app is a simple way to ensure they can apply for their job quickly and get on with earning extra cash."
A critical piece of information for starting a new job is the National Insurance number. HMRC reports that over 146,000 people called the National Insurance helpline in the 12 months leading up to early April, having lost or forgotten their number.
The HMRC app offers a quicker and easier solution, allowing individuals to access their NI number directly. Users can download it and securely store it in their phone's digital wallet for immediate access whenever needed. In the 12 months to April 2025, app users aged 25 and under alone made nearly 90,000 NI number downloads.
HMRC advises young people to keep their National Insurance number secure in their digital wallets and only share it with trusted parties, such as an employer, to help prevent potential identity fraud.
Additionally, HMRC is reminding young people in new jobs to consistently check their payslips. This ensures they are receiving the correct pay in line with National Minimum Wage requirements. If any concerns arise regarding incorrect pay, individuals can contact HMRC or ACAS to make a complaint.
