Consumer Council Tips For Stress-Free Summer Travel
As the holiday season draws closer, the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland is encouraging consumers to plan thoroughly for their summer travels.
The organisation has issued a comprehensive guide packed with useful tips to help reduce stress and save money, whether travelling by public transport, air, or sea.
Michelle Kelly, Head of Transport Policy at the Consumer Council, highlighted the importance of preparation during what is typically a busy period. "It's best to plan ahead during this busy period. Be it unexpected disruption to flights or sailings due to extraordinary circumstances or delays for any reason, knowing your rights ahead of travel can help," she advised.
Ms Kelly also reminded travellers to be proactive in checking airline policies, particularly regarding cabin bag allowances, to avoid unexpected charges at the airport. "We have chosen our 2025 summer travel tips based on our communication with consumers over the past year. Hopefully, our tips will help travellers avoid unnecessary hassle and expense," she added.
Consumer Council's Top Travel Essentials:
• Know Your Rights: Familiarise yourself with consumer rights concerning delayed or cancelled flights or sailings. Further details are available at www.consumercouncil.org.uk/consumers/help-consumers/travel-and-transport.
• Be Flexible When Booking: Consider flexible airfares and accommodation options that include cancellation, as these may offer long-term savings despite a slightly higher upfront cost.
• Passport Check: If a new passport is needed, confirm application timelines with the passport issuer well in advance of your travel date.
• Pre-book Special Assistance: For individuals with disabilities or reduced mobility, ensure necessary assistance is booked at least 48 hours prior to travel.
• Airport Parking: Check and pre-book airport parking charges to secure better rates.
• Travel Insurance: Purchase travel insurance well in advance, ensuring it covers all your needs, including flights or sailings departing from the Republic of Ireland. • Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC): When travelling to EU countries, obtain a GHIC for access to healthcare at reduced cost or for free. This is not a substitute for travel insurance, and private travel and medical insurance are still highly recommended.
• Latest Travel Updates: Regularly check with your airline, airport, or ferry operator for the most current travel advice and information.
• Public Transport Timetables: Verify public transport schedules if integrating buses or trains into your journey plan.
• Hand Luggage Allowances: Be aware that hand luggage allowances and restrictions vary significantly between airlines and are strictly enforced. Some airlines only permit one free cabin bag, meaning additional items like handbags may incur a fee. Also, review airport security procedures, especially regarding liquids.
• Roaming Charges: If travelling to EU countries, confirm with your mobile phone provider whether roaming charges will apply. Further information is available at eu-exit-and-mobile-roaming.
• Travelling with a Pet: For Northern Ireland residents travelling to Great Britain, the only requirement for pets is microchipping. More details on pet travel abroad can be found at www.gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad/travelling-to-northern-ireland.
Addressing Travel Difficulties
Should consumers encounter difficulties with their travel arrangements, the Consumer Council may be able to offer assistance. They investigate transport complaints related to airlines, ferry travel, or public transport.
If an issue arises with a transport provider in Northern Ireland, consumers should first lodge a complaint directly with the provider to allow them an opportunity to resolve the matter. If a satisfactory response is not received, or if the outcome is deemed unacceptable, the Consumer Council can be contacted for investigation and support.
Consumers can reach the Consumer Council by telephone on 0800 121 6022, available Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, or by emailing contact@consumercouncil.org.uk.
