NI Side Hustlers Urged To File Tax Returns Early to Avoid January Rush
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is encouraging anyone in Northern Ireland earning extra income from a side hustle to check their tax obligations now and file their Self Assessment tax return without delay.
This proactive approach aims to help individuals understand their tax situation sooner and potentially spread payments over time, avoiding the last-minute rush before the 31 January 2026 deadline.
The call applies to a wide range of additional income streams, from online selling and content creation to dog walking and property rental, and importantly, includes gains or income received from cryptoassets. The key threshold to remember is £1,000: anyone earning more than this from their side hustle in a tax year may need to register for Self Assessment and complete a tax return. Individuals unsure if they need to complete a tax return for the 2024 to 2025 tax year can utilise the checker tool available on GOV.UK. New entrants to Self Assessment must register to receive their Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). Easy-to-use guides specifically for side hustlers can be found at taxhelpforhustles.campaign.gov.uk.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Director General for Customer Services, commented: "Whether you are selling handmade crafts online, creating digital content, or renting out property, understanding your tax obligations is essential. If you earn more than £1,000 from these activities, you may need to complete a Self Assessment tax return. Filing early puts you in control – you will know exactly what you owe, can plan your payments, and avoid the stress of the January rush. You don't need to pay immediately when you file – you have until 31 January to settle your tax bill."
The official deadline for submitting an online Self Assessment tax return and paying any tax owed for the 2024 to 2025 tax year is 31 January 2026.
Early preparation is particularly crucial for sole traders or landlords whose qualifying income exceeds £50,000. These individuals will need to transition to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax from April 2026, which mandates digital record-keeping and quarterly updates using compatible software.
