Alliance Antrim & Newtownabbey Councillor Billy Webb has been appointed as the new President of the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA).
His appointment was confirmed today, Friday, 27 June 2025, at the Association's Annual General Meeting, where he underscored his commitment to fostering collaboration to ensure the long-term sustainability of local councils and the essential services they deliver.
Councillor Webb brings extensive experience to the role, having served as a Councillor on the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council since 1997. Throughout his tenure, he has held various prominent positions, including Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the borough. He has also been an Office Bearer with NILGA since May 2023.
Speaking at the AGM, Councillor Webb stated: "As a dedicated public servant, it is an honour to be elected as President of NILGA. This year, I am committed to adopting a collaborative approach to ensure the sustainability of local councils and the crucial services they provide."
He further emphasised the critical need for a stronger working relationship between different tiers of government. "It's essential we strengthen the relationship between central and local government so they can collaborate more effectively, and facilitate a sustainable, long-term path for Northern Ireland," Councillor Webb added.
The new NILGA President highlighted the pivotal role of local councils in communities, addressing issues such as economic development, community services, and climate action. He affirmed his intention to champion the sector's recognition as a vital partner in policy and decision-making. "For meaningful change to occur in Northern Ireland, local government must be recognised as a key consultee and policy partner in decision-making. During my year as President, I will ensure NILGA will continue to advocate for the further devolution of powers to local government."
Councillor Webb concluded by advocating for the potential of empowered local governance: "By leveraging creativity and community insight, we can drive sustainable progress if local government is treated as an equal sphere of governance.”
SF Backs Call For Marian Beattie Murder Investigation Review
Sinn Féin MLA John O' Dowd has expressed his full support for the family of Marian Beattie, as they continue their long-standing campaign for truth and justice following her tragic death in 1973.
The Beattie family met with the Police Ombudsman to discuss ongoing concerns about the original police investigation into Marian's death and the unanswered questions that continue to surround the case over 50 years later.
Speaking after the meeting, the Upper Bann MLA said: "The Beattie family's campaign has always been marked by dignity, determination and a deep desire to uncover the truth about what happened to Marian. Today's meeting with the Police Ombudsman is a significant step forward in their pursuit of justice.
"I want to commend the family for their courage and persistence over so many years.
"The pain of loss is compounded when the truth is hidden or denied. Marian's memory deserves justice, and her family deserves closure. I will continue to stand with them and support their calls for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of her death."
