Drivers Warned Of Rising QR Code Car Park Scams
Police are urging drivers across Northern Ireland to exercise extreme caution when paying for parking using QR codes, following a recent increase in scam incidents targeting car park users.
Scammers are reportedly placing fraudulent QR code stickers over legitimate ones found on parking meters and official signage. These deceptive codes redirect unsuspecting users to malicious websites specifically designed to steal personal and financial information.
In recent weeks, police have received multiple reports of motorists inadvertently entering their credit card details into these fake parking portals, leading to unauthorised transactions. Authorities are emphasising the importance of public awareness regarding these scams and how to avoid becoming a victim.
Key tips to help drivers avoid QR code scams include:
• Inspect the QR code carefully: Always look for any signs of tampering, such as stickers placed over original signage. If there is any doubt about its authenticity, it is safer to manually enter the official website address rather than scanning the code. • Use official parking apps or websites: Opt for established, official parking applications or websites instead of relying on third-party links accessed via QR codes. If unsure, seek out alternative payment methods or information, as car parks should typically provide multiple ways to pay.
• Check the website URL: Before entering any details, verify that the website address is secure (beginning with "https://") and that the domain name genuinely matches the official parking provider.
• Report suspicious activity: Immediately report any suspicious QR codes or related activity to the police or directly to the car park operator.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that they are continuing to work in close collaboration with local councils and private car park operators to identify and remove these fraudulent QR codes and to enhance existing security measures.
If you believe you've been scammed, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to police at www.psni.police.uk/report. You can also report to Action Fraud on www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling police on 101.
