Detective Constable Smyth condemned the severity of the attack: "This was a terrifying attack on the victim which left her requiring staples to the right side of her head and had her suffering significant swelling. McLaughlin is a very violent man who threatened his victim's life with her children present. I commend her bravery in seeing this case through the criminal justice process to get to sentencing today. She pushed through the fear barrier he built around her and fought for justice."

Detective Constable Smyth reiterated the PSNI's commitment to tackling domestic abuse: “Domestic abuse can happen to anyone and it is unacceptable. If you are being subjected to coercive controlling behaviour or violence, please report it to us or the 24 hour Domestic Violence helpline. We can help you.”

The PSNI encourages anyone experiencing domestic abuse to seek help. Reports can be made by calling 101, or in an emergency, always dial 999. The 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline is also available on 0808 802 1414.
