SDLP Demands Fundamental Reform At Belfast Trust

The SDLP has called for "fundamental change" at the Belfast Trust following the departure of its chair.

South Down MLA and Opposition Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath MLA highlighted long-standing concerns about the Trust's management, stressing that the recent scandal within the Cardiac Unit represents merely the latest in a series of significant failings. He also noted that health workers from across Northern Ireland have contacted him with similar anxieties.

Mr McGrath expressed his surprise at attempts to downplay the concerns of whistleblowers when Trust leaders appeared before Stormont's Health Committee. He firmly believes there must be a basic acknowledgment of these issues and a clear commitment to genuine reform.

Detailing a history of challenges, Mr McGrath said: "From the delayed opening of the new maternity hospital to damaging patient recall incidents and persistent workplace culture concerns, the Belfast Trust has been mired in controversy. These are not problems caused by one individual, they require systemic reform."

The SDLP MLA concluded by urging the Health Minister to act decisively: "The Health Minister must now act quickly to appoint a new chair and work with staff and patients to rebuild trust and deliver the change that is so badly needed."
