NI's First Treetop Walk Project Moves Forward
The next phase of Northern Ireland's first-ever treetop walk can now move forward following the successful completion and approval of the project's Outline Business Case, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has announced.
At a recent council meeting, elected members approved a significant £6.8 million investment to support the delivery of the treetop walk which will be located at Castlewellan Forest Park in County Down. Working in partnership with EAK Ireland, the project will support up to 33 construction jobs during its development and, once completed, is expected to create 32 permanent operational roles and attract an additional 220,000 visitors to the park each year.
Following the council's approval, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Phillip Campbell said: "We are proud to advance to the next phase of the Castlewellan treetop walk - an iconic project that reflects the council's commitment to sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship and the long-term enhancement of one of our district's most treasured natural assets. "By investing in this unique attraction, we are not only protecting and promoting our natural heritage but also creating new opportunities for local employment and regional growth. The treetop walk has the potential to become a flagship destination for visitors from across the island of Ireland and beyond."
The treetop walk will feature a gradient that never rises above 6%, so it's suitable for all ages and abilities. It will also promote low-impact and active travel options to help reduce the region's carbon footprint, ensuring that the attraction good for both the economy and the environment.
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir said: "Castlewellan Forest Park is one of Northern Ireland's most scenic and ecologically rich landscapes. I am keen to see its recreational and tourism potential developed, whilst safeguarding our environment for future generations."
As the project moves forward, the council will now focus on the next steps. This includes appointing an Integrated Consultancy Team (ICT) to lead on detailed design work and necessary infrastructure planning. At the same time, discussions will continue with DAERA Forest Service regarding land agreements that will enable development within Castlewellan Forest Park.
