Man Charged After Failing To Stop In L'Derry
A man who was arrested by District Support Team officers in the Eastway area of L'Derry on Monday evening, 28 July, has been charged to court.
The 21-year-old man faces charges of dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle without insurance, failing to stop for police, no driving licence, and possession of a Class A controlled drug.
He is scheduled to appear before Londonderry Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 20 August. All charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service as per standard procedure.
SDLP Questions Pace Of Waiting List Reduction Efforts
Colin McGrath MLA, SDLP Opposition Health Spokesperson, has commented on the appointment of Professor Mark Taylor to lead efforts in reducing Northern Ireland's health waiting lists. While recognising the new role, the South Down MLA expressed concern over the lengthy delay in making such a critical intervention, given the persistent rise in waiting times over many years.
Mr McGrath highlighted a lack of meaningful detail regarding Professor Taylor’s specific remit and how the appointment will concretely reduce lists. He stressed that the success of this role, and the wider Executive's response, will be judged solely on tangible progress in bringing down waiting times, urging for measures that address underlying causes to prevent future crises.
He also criticised the re-announcement of previously allocated funding, including £85 million for urgent care, £80 million for capacity, and up to £50 million for backlog, stating that the public desires "concrete action, not recycled figures." Mr McGrath further underscored the urgency of the situation, noting the ongoing collective action by GPs, and concluded that despite "warm words," confidence in the Executive's ability to meet the challenge remains low.
Gondola Project For Kilbroney Forest Park Rejected By DAERA
Alliance Mournes Councillor Jill Truesdale has welcomed the announcement that the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has rejected a proposal to move the controversial gondola project to Kilbroney Forest Park in Rostrevor.
Councillor Truesdale stated her satisfaction with the decision, emphasising that Rostrevor Forest is renowned for its scenic landscapes and natural environment. She argued that installing a gondola would pose a threat to wildlife and the surrounding environment, while also detracting from the natural beauty cherished by many.
The Alliance party, along with numerous local residents, had strongly opposed the project, consistently raising concerns over its potential economic and environmental impacts. Councillor Truesdale expressed pleasure that Minister Muir decided to halt the installation, citing serious concerns about the consequences for the local landscape if the project had proceeded.
