Man Charged After Police Officer Dragged By Car In Kilkeel
A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with an incident in Kilkeel where a police officer was dragged by a moving vehicle and injured. The incident occurred on the Mountain Road on Friday, 1st August.
The man has been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police. He is due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 27th August. As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
The incident took place at around 10.15pm when officers were conducting traffic duties and had cause to stop a silver Mitsubishi Shogun. Inspector Connolly said that as an officer was leaning into the vehicle, he detected a strong smell he suspected was cannabis. When questioned, the driver made off at speed, dragging the officer for several metres before he could free himself. The officer sustained an arm injury and has since received hospital treatment.
Inspector Connolly said it was "completely unacceptable" that police officers should be deliberately injured.
"The outcome of the driver's actions could have been much more serious and the public should rest assured that the perpetrator will face the consequences," he added.
Police are appealing to anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to contact them on 101 quoting reference 1742 of 01/08/25.
