Kimmins Announces £633k Resurfacing Scheme On Short Strand

A £633,000 resurfacing scheme will begin on Friday, 22 August, on the Short Strand in Belfast, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced.

The scheme will involve carriageway resurfacing between Albertbridge Road and Bridge End and a section of the A23 Mountpottinger Road past the Translink Bus Station.

Discussing the scheme Minister Kimmins said: "This is a significant investment for the Short Strand area and forms part of my ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving our road network. Once completed, the resurfacing will improve the structural condition of the road and enhance safety for all who travel through this busy area of East Belfast. I would like to thank road users and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out."

As a result of the works, three full weekend road closures on Short Strand will be required:

• From 8pm on Friday, 22 August, until 6am on Monday, 25 August;

• From 8pm on Friday, 29 August, until 6am on Monday, 1 September;

• From 8pm on Friday, 12 September, until 6am on Monday, 15 September.

During these closures, signed diversion routes will be in operation. For traffic travelling from Albertbridge Road to Bridge End: via Albertbridge Road – Newtownards Road – Bridge End; For traffic travelling from Bridge End to Albertbridge Road: via Bridge End – Oxford Street – East Bridge Street – Albertbridge Road.

The resurfacing programme is expected to be completed by mid-September 2025.

Serious Crash In Co Antrim
A serious crash has occurred in Co Antrim. The Doagh Road in Newtownabbey has been closed between the Bridge Road and Monkstown Road. Diversions have been put in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area. No other information has been released.

Man Dies In Workplace Accident In Co Armagh
A man has died in a workplace accident in Co Armagh. It is believed the man was crushed by a road roller while a new road surface was being laid on the Bog Road, Forkhill, on Wednesday, 31 May. Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation.
