PHA Urges Parents To Discuss Alcohol And Drug Risks With Teens
With A-level and GCSE results being released over the coming days, the Public Health Agency (PHA) is encouraging parents and guardians to talk openly and honestly with young people about the risks associated with drinking alcohol and taking drugs.
Kevin Bailey, Joint Regional Lead for Substance Use at the PHA, highlighted the dangers of excessive drinking, which can include both short-term effects like vomiting and hangovers, and more serious risks such as damage to vital organs and accidents. He also warned that drinking too much can affect a person's judgement, leading to regrettable actions.
Mr Bailey also noted the risks of drug use, stating that misusing drugs can cause serious health damage and even death. He emphasised that people can never be sure what has gone into a drug and strongly recommended against taking them. He urged young people to seek urgent medical help if a friend becomes unwell after taking drugs, reminding them that it could save a life.
Acknowledging the stress of results time, Mr Bailey also addressed the potential impact on mental health and emotional wellbeing. He said that not getting the grades hoped for can cause feelings of anxiety or disappointment. He urged parents to look out for signs of stress and directed people to www.MindingYourHead.info for information on mental health support in Northern Ireland.
