SDLP Leads Call For Prime Minister To Act On Gaza
The SDLP has led a coalition of political parties from Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in an open letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to recall Parliament to address the deteriorating situation in Gaza.
The letter was signed by a wide range of parties, including the SNP, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Féin, the Green Party, the Alliance Party, and People Before Profit.
The letter calls for urgent diplomatic intervention, an immediate end to all arms sales to Israel, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. It states that the humanitarian catastrophe is both "man-made and avoidable." The signatories are demanding that the Prime Minister make it clear to Benjamin Netanyahu that the UK "will no longer stand by" while the situation continues.
SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP said that "ever growing numbers of people across these islands have shown their horror and anguish at the events unfolding before our eyes in Gaza." She added that the people of Gaza "don't have the luxury of waiting any longer for the UK Government to act." Ms Hanna believes that the voice of the parties, "together it is a powerful one," which reflects the deep feeling of their constituents and highlights the UK Government's failure to do more to protect the people of Gaza.
