Parents Urged To Extend Child Benefit Claim
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging parents to extend their Child Benefit claim for teenagers who are continuing in full-time education or approved training after their GCSE results are released.
More than 509,000 parents have already extended their claim online, with a record-breaking 67% using the digital service. The deadline to extend the claim is Sunday, 31 August, after which payments will stop automatically.
Child Benefit is worth £26.05 per week for the eldest or only child and £17.25 for each additional child. This amounts to an annual total of £1,354.60 and £897 respectively.
HMRC has written to 1.5 million parents to remind them to extend their claim for their 16 to 19-year-olds. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, said: "Teenagers can be expensive and Child Benefit is an important source of income for your household. As soon as you know what your teen is doing in September, don't miss out. You can extend your claim in minutes through the HMRC app or online to ensure your payments continue."
Parents can extend their claim via the HMRC app or online digital service, or by scanning the QR code on their reminder letter.
Child Benefit can be paid for young people in non-advanced education or approved training courses. A full list of approved courses is available on GOV.UK.
Families where a parent earns between £60,000 and £80,000 may be subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge. An online calculator can provide an estimate of how much benefit will be received and what the charge may be. A new digital service will soon allow eligible employed parents to pay the charge directly through their PAYE tax code.
Families who have previously opted out of payments can restart their claim quickly online or via the HMRC app.
