Award Nomination For 'Causeway Healthy Kids'
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council's 'Causeway Healthy Kids' programme has been shortlisted for the 'Best Health and Wellbeing Initiative' at the 2025 APSE Awards.
The programme, which has already won six awards, was introduced by the Council's Sport and Wellbeing team in 2022. It promotes healthy lifestyles for children of primary school age and is run in partnership with the Northern Healthy Lifestyles Partnership, and the Northern Health and Social Care Trust's Dietetics and Mental Health Departments. Its success has led to its model being adopted by two other councils. Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, praised the team's diligent work on the programme, which has been delivered to 58 schools in the Council area. A further 10 schools are due to complete it during 2025/26.
Sports Development Manager, Jonathan McFadden, who led the programme, said it was designed in partnership with multiple departments within the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. The programme, delivered by council facilitators, has been "thoroughly enjoyed by the children and embraced by schools."
By March 2026, the programme will have supported almost 2,000 children from the Causeway Coast and Glens area. Since 2022, 14 Council officers have worked on the project, and four Ulster University placement students have also helped to deliver learning materials.
The APSE Awards, which recognise local authorities and public-sector partners across the UK, will take place in Glasgow from Wednesday, 10 September to Thursday, 11 September.
