Road Safety Appeal Issued Ahead Of Bank Holiday Weekend

The PSNI are urging drivers to slow down and take extra care on the roads ahead of the summer bank holiday on Monday, 25 August.

Officers will be carrying out high-visibility patrols across the region, with a focus on speeding under Operation Lifesaver, as well as targeting drink and drug driving.

Superintendent John Wilson said: "At this time of the year, we see increased traffic on the roads and we want everyone who starts off on their journey to get there and to get home safely.

"As we approach the end of National Road Victim Month, we reflect on the 30 lives lost on Northern Ireland's roads this year to date, as well as all of those who have been injured in collisions. We are urging people to play their part in road safety. The impact of each life lost is immeasurable with so many people, including loved ones and communities, affected. These numbers are more than statistics.

"During this month, we brought you Anne's story who sustained life-changing injuries as a passenger in a collision. Anne hopes by sharing her story helps you to make good decisions when driving and you remember your responsibilities when you have passengers with you. We urge you to listen to Anne who says 'don't wait until it's too late to realise that you're not untouchable'.

"Our appeal to drivers is to be alert to the presence of motorcyclists and cyclists using the road network, particularly when emerging from and turning into junctions. There are also likely to be many more pedestrians on our roads. Please be aware of this as drivers, and to pedestrians please ensure you are visible to traffic at all times."
