Justice Minister Launches Report On LGBTQIA+ Domestic Abuse

Justice Minister Naomi Long has launched a new report on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ victims of domestic abuse in Northern Ireland.

The research, conducted by HEReNI in partnership with Cara-Friend and The Rainbow Project, examines the prevalence of domestic abuse and the specific issues and barriers faced by victims in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Speaking at the launch at Stormont, the Minister thanked those who participated in the study, saying their contribution would "make going forward." She stressed that domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of their background or identity, and that a concerted effort is needed to challenge the harmful attitudes that allow it to happen.

Cara McCann, Director of HERe NI, said the research "gives a voice to our community" and highlights the "urgent need for inclusive services and support." She added that her organisation is committed to ensuring that no one is "left behind and that survivors feel seen, heard, and safe."

The report's findings will be used to inform future actions across government and wider society.

The Domestic Abuse and Sexual Abuse Helpline is available 24 hours a day on 0808 802 1414 for anyone affected by domestic abuse.
