Student Safety Campaign Launches In Belfast

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has partnered with Queen's University Belfast, Ulster University, and Belfast Metropolitan College to launch this year's student safety campaign.

The initiative aims to encourage safe and respectful behaviour among students arriving in Belfast for the new academic year.

The campaign will provide essential crime prevention advice and will be accessible to students through social media channels. The PSNI's Belfast City Chief Inspector, Mark Conway, stated that the safety and wellbeing of students and the wider community are of "paramount importance." He emphasised the police's commitment to creating safer spaces as part of the Tackling Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) Action Plan.

A key part of the campaign is the 'Ask for Angela' initiative, which was launched three years ago. The initiative allows individuals who feel vulnerable to discreetly ask for help at over 400 participating bars and clubs across Northern Ireland.

Ryan Rankin, Neighbourhood Engagement Officer at Queen's University, said the campaign is vital in helping students feel safe and connected to available support networks. Una Calvert, Community Relations Officer at Ulster University, highlighted the university's commitment to student safety through comprehensive security measures and partnerships with the PSNI.

Paula Irvine, Student Wellbeing Manager at Belfast Met, stated that the college is fully supportive of the campaign and will work with partners to ensure students feel safe and show respect to their neighbours. Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of People and Communities Committee at Belfast City Council, added that the city wants every student to feel "safe, supported, and part of our community."
