Council Issues Warning On Battery Disposal
Residents across Northern Ireland are being reminded to correctly dispose of batteries after a fire in a bin lorry in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC) Borough highlighted the dangers of improper disposal.
The fire, which occurred near Dromore, was caused by a battery that ignited after being compacted with other waste. Batteries should never be placed in household bins, as they can be damaged in collection vehicles, posing a significant risk to waste collection staff, the vehicle, and the public. Improper disposal can also lead to environmental damage from pollutants leaking out.
Lord Mayor of the ABC Borough, Alderman Stephen Moutray, said that while many people have made great progress in recycling, some may not realise the importance of correctly disposing of batteries.
"Our own staff have seen at first hand the dangers which batteries can cause," he said. "We want to keep our staff safe when they are collecting waste as well as protecting the safety of the wider public."
