Lord Mayor Opens Book Of Condolence For Duchess Of Kent
Belfast's Lord Mayor, Councillor Tracy Kelly, has opened an online book of condolence at Belfast City Hall in memory of HRH The Duchess of Kent. The Duchess was known for her grace and compassion and was a regular attendee at the National Day of Remembrance at City Hall for many years.
Councillor Kelly offered condolences on behalf of the citizens of Belfast to the Duke of Kent and the wider Royal Family. The Lord Lieutenant for the County Borough of Belfast, Dame Fionnuala Jay-O'Boyle, also expressed her sadness at the passing.
The online book of condolence is available to sign on the Belfast City Council website at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/condolences until Tuesday, 16 September.
Beattie Calls For Reform Of Assembly Standards Process Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) MLA Doug Beattie has called for the reform of the Assembly's standards process, stating that the current system is "dominated by the major political parties." He noted that a recommendation to add lay members with voting rights, first made by a previous commissioner and included in the New Decade New Approach deal, has still not been implemented five years on.
Mr Beattie also highlighted the frustrations of the outgoing commissioner, Dr Melissa McCullough, who was unable to investigate MLAs for actions that were not linked to their official role, even if they brought the Assembly into disrepute. He argues that this needs to be changed to ensure accountability.
The UUP MLA believes that the current status quo on standards and privileges prevents fundamental change and that a lack of accountability is at the heart of the system.
Paul Maskey Condemns Latest 5G Mast Arson
West Belfast MP Paul Maskey has condemned the burning of another 5G mast on the Whiterock Road on Sunday night, stating that the act shows a "total disregard for our community."
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on telecommunications masts in the area.
According to the MP, the cost to replace masts damaged since 2023 has now risen to "several millions of pounds." He called for action to bring those responsible to justice and hold them accountable for the "havoc caused across our city."
Mr Maskey said the attacks, which he believes are "often fuelled by dangerous misinformation," must stop. He strongly condemned the "shameful campaign of destruction" and called on the public to stand together against the spread of falsehoods.
