Health Campaign Urges Public To 'Take 5 Steps To Wellbeing'

A new mental health campaign from the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Health and Social Care (HSC) organisations is encouraging people to look after their mental health in the same way they would their physical health. The campaign, which runs between World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September and World Mental Health Day on 10 October, encourages people to practise self-care using the 'Take 5 steps to wellbeing'.

The 'Take 5 steps to wellbeing' are:

• Connect: Build and maintain relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and your community.

• Keep learning: Try new things, rediscover old hobbies, or sign up for a course to boost confidence.

• Be active: Find a physical activity that you enjoy, such as walking, running, or gardening.

• Take notice: Be aware of your surroundings and how they make you feel.

• Give: Do something nice for others, volunteer your time, or join a community group.

Fiona Teague, Regional Lead for Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing at the PHA, said that these steps can act as a guide for wellbeing and that practising them daily can help build resilience. She added that looking after our mental health is not just for when we are feeling down but should be a proactive part of our daily routine.

Mental health problems are common, with one in five people experiencing one at any given time. The campaign urges people to recognise the signs of poor mental health and seek professional help if things are not improving.

If you or someone you know is in distress or crisis, you can call Lifeline on 0808 808 8000, which is available 24/7. In an emergency, always call 999.
