New Career Framework To Support Nursing And Midwifery Staff

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has announced the development of a new career framework for nursing and midwifery to support workforce retention and personal development.

The framework, called the NI Career and Development Model for Nursing & Midwifery, is set to be formally launched later this year.

The model is designed to empower staff, promote a skilled workforce, and provide structured routes for career progression.

It will be guided by three core career pathways: clinical, operational and management, and education and research. The Minister stated that while a 3% rise in the number of nurses and midwives on the NMC register is encouraging, a "significant number" of posts remain vacant.

The Minister also announced the start of a new regional Masters in Advanced Practice programme, delivered by both Queen's University and Ulster University. This programme will help grow the advanced practice workforce. Additionally, work is underway to establish an NI Advanced Practice Academy to support the education and ongoing professional development of the workforce.
