Newry Chamber Takes Lead On Road Safety

The Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade has become the first Chamber to sign up to the 'Share the Road to Zero' campaign and to host the PSNI's hard-hitting RoadSafe Roadshow.

The move aims to raise road safety awareness in a region with the highest rate of fatal and serious collisions caused by speeding in Northern Ireland.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins thanked the Chamber for taking these steps, highlighting that Newry, Mourne and Down as a local government district had the highest rate of fatal and serious collisions caused by speeding between 2019 and 2023. During this five-year period, there were 36 Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) collisions and 59 KSI casualties.

The Minister noted that the RoadSafe Roadshow, which normally targets a teenage audience, contains powerful messages that are equally relevant to more experienced drivers in the business community. She stressed that while individuals never think they are the problem, it is important to remember that to everyone else, "you are the 'someone else'".

Edwina Flynn, President of the Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade, said the Chamber was "very happy to add our name to the growing list of organisations" supporting the campaign. She stated that the statistics for Newry, Mourne and Down underline the need for the business community to raise awareness about road safety. She added that it is a responsibility business leaders have to keep themselves, their employees, and their customers safe.
